How many guests fit at a wedding table?

The rental-industry standards: a 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably (10 at a squeeze), a 72-inch round seats 10–12, and an 8-foot banquet table seats 8–10 with chairs on both sides. "Comfortably" is the number to plan around — packing tables to their maximum saves a couple of rentals but costs elbow room, and your guests sit at these tables for hours.

If you're having a head table, set its seats aside first: those people don't occupy guest tables, and forgetting that is the classic way to over-rent by one table.

Why the table count matters so much

Almost every reception line item follows it: linens, centerpieces, table numbers, favors-per-table, and the floor plan itself. Lock the table count early and every one of those decisions gets a real number; change it late and you're re-doing the florist order. The empty-seat figure the calculator shows is useful too — two or three spare seats is healthy slack for late RSVP changes, while a nearly empty last table usually means it's worth squeezing one guest per table instead.
